1. Latest events and forthcoming sessions

It has been a very busy week, with a focus on wasp control. The bait which was deployed on Monday the 27th was collected between Thursday and Saturday. We were lucky with the weather which was sunny and warm. Thank you again to all of you who helped!

This week the weather forecast is a different story, with very unsettled weather. As a result, both our volunteer sessions are cancelled. We'll resume our field work next week with the Thursday session, on the 16th of March. We are not doing baiting at the moment, so we can afford to stay dry this time!

From MetService

"Please note, that a Watch is in force for significant heavy rain for Northland, Auckland, Waitomo, Taranaki, Taumarunui, Taupo, Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay. The initial burst of rain should ease during Wednesday, but further rain is expected during Thursday and Friday. Rainfall of this intensity can produce flash flooding and cause rivers and streams to rise rapidly. It can also lead to adverse conditions for motorists."

So anyone intending to head out in to the field, please check the weather forecast before you decide to set off to complete your tasks!

On a happier note, welcome to Rodney Dugmore, Natasha & Nick Eichler, Linda Friend, Hazel Penton, Zenobia Southcombe and Jono Yiu who joined the Ark in February.

Also thank you to our sausage cooks: Marilyn Burgess, Kay Wight and Rosemary Stagg for taking care of the BBQ after the weekend sessions and to Kay for being the BBQ chef on Wasp Day!

2. Events at the Ark as part of EcoWest festival - help needed

It's EcoWest festival time! See below for how the Ark will be involved. You are welcome to join either of these walks as a guest, however we also need volunteers to help out by accompanying the group, in particular as tail end charlie. If you can help or have any questions please contact Annalily via the contact details below.

3. Post wasp control monitoring

We will continue doing wasp monitoring until one month after the control day held in February. The graph below shows the monitoring results so far, with the date the poison was put out shown by the thin red line. Initial results show a pleasing decrease in numbers.

Thanks to Kevin Ferguson for his persistence with the monitoring!
