1. Latest events and forthcoming sessions

We hope you had a good Easter weekend and that the egg hunt was a success! Now it is time to start our autumn baiting round.

There will be a volunteer session on Thursday the 5th of April, starting 8:30am at the ranger station. There will be another session on Saturday, the 7th of April, starting at 8:30am as well. We have had a large number of enquiries from new volunteers recently. New volunteers are welcome to attend on Saturday. If it is your first time, please ensure you contact me before Friday afternoon.

Please keep in mind that the gate on Falls Road is still closed, so we will come and open the gate at 8:30am. Late arrivals, please park at the golf club car park and walk down to the ranger station. The Saturday session will be followed by a sausage sizzle!

Please let me know if you are coming to any of these sessions. Also please note that if you make a last minute decision or have an unexpected change of plans it's best that you leave a message on our phone 09 810 7014 rather than email me.

Wasps are still quite active at the moment, but we hope that with the cooler nights nests will soon die. Meanwhile, if you are going out in to the bush, be careful where you step! People sensitive to wasp stings should stay away from the bush or be very careful when doing field work. All volunteers should make sure that they have anti histamine tablets with them before heading out (we keep first aid kits and repair kits stocked with tablets, however please check that they are present before you go). Simple precautions include limiting your skin exposure (for example, long pants will protect you better than shorts) and avoiding wearing dark or bright colours. It seems that white (or pale colours) are good to wear ...

Welcome to Elena De Dios who joined the Ark in March. Also thank you to our sausage cooks: Marilyn Burgess and Kay Wight for taking care of the BBQ after the weekend sessions.

Welcome to Aiko Hibi from Japan who will be with us for around two weeks.

2. Talk from Search and Rescue

Following the tragic events of February, and as we head in to winter, we thought it would be good to find out more about safe stream crossing practices as well as other bush safety tips from the people who are out there dealing with our kinds of conditions.

A staff member of the Auckland Search and Rescue unit will be coming to give us a talk. We encourage you all to come along to refresh or learn from an expert.

When: Thursday 26th of April, 7pm

Where: Waitākere Golf Club, Falls Road.

RSVP by Friday the 20th of April.
