1. Latest events and forthcoming sessions

We had a very successful trapping workshop on Sunday a week ago. Ken our trap doctor demonstrated how to safely handle the different traps used at the Ark and how to look after them. Trappers from the buffer zone and Ark trappers mingled around the traps (and Rosemary's legendary scones). Thanks Ken and Annalily for organising this day!

Last weekend, I had to cancel our Saturday session because of the heavy rain in the morning. Some of us attended the Love Our Kauri Hui at EcoMatters. You can watch the recorded webinar on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/EcoMattersNZ/

This week, the Ark is at the NZ Flower & Garden Show, held at the Trust Stadium, Henderson. If you go the event, don't miss the Ark stand! You can see some pictures of its set up on our Facebook page here.

Also, on Saturday evening, there will be our end of year celebration with a hangi held at the Ark. Details will be sent in a couple of days to the people who have registered. It's not too late to RSVP, please contact us by tomorrow morning if you would like to come.

On the field side, there will be two volunteer sessions on Thursday the 29th of November and on Saturday the 1st of December, starting at 8:30am at the ranger station.

Please note that these sessions are not suitable for new volunteers. The next induction session for new volunteers will be held on Saturday the 15th of December.

Please let me know if you are coming to either of these sessions. Also please note that if you make a last minute decision (after 5pm) or have an unexpected change of plans it's best that you leave a message on our phone 09 810 7014 rather than email me.

Also a big thank you to our cooks: Rosemary Stagg and Kay Wight for looking after the BBQ in November!

2. Kōkako activities

The great nest search continues!

We now have five active nests and another pair looking like they are preparing to nest. The nesting pairs are:

Francis and Zelah

Ataahua and Kapua: a bit of mystery surrounds this nest... a chick was banded but hasn’t been seen recently.

Many of you will remember the long standing kōkako couple Maurice and Kowhai who have fledged many chicks together over the years. This year there has been no sign of Karen but Maurice has a nest with his new unbanded partner.

Lastly, Thurley and Aumangea are brooding three eggs!

Thanks to the the team of nest watchers and trap checkers who are giving these nests extra protection and keeping an eye on the chicks so we know when the right time to band them is.
