1. Latest and forthcoming sessions

Last Thursday was a very wet session - probably the worst since last winter - however it didn't deter the eleven brave volunteers who resolutely set off in to the bush!

This week there won't be a volunteer session on Thursday, Gillian and I being away in Wellington for the Forest and Bird all staff meeting.

The next volunteer session will be held on Saturday the 25th of February, starting 8:45am at the ranger station. We'll do line maintenance. Please note that because of the upcoming wasp control (see below) which requires preparation, Saturday will be a limited session for experienced volunteers who can work independently.

Please let me know if you are coming to this session. Also please note that if you make a last minute decision or have an unexpected change of plans it's best that you leave a message on our phone 09 810 7014.

2. Wasp control - to go ahead this coming Monday the 27th

To do the control or not to do the control ... The bad weather interfered with our wasp monitoring again. The cards were put out on Monday. The results were collected today.

As the graph shows, there is a significant increase in wasp numbers for 2 of the monitor lines. As a result we will run the wasp control on Monday the 27th of February, 7am at the ranger station. The weather forecast looks fine for Monday and Tuesday which are critical days for the wasp control.

I'll contact the people who have offered to help with the wasp bait deployment directly, so if you would like to help on the 27th and have not told me yet, please do so quickly, by 12pm Friday!

As a reminder, these are the points to take into account if you would like to help on Monday:

be ready for an early start: 7am (lines have to be baited before noon)

be (reasonably) fit

be prepared for the fact that it is wasp season, therefore wasps may be encountered in the bush

Full details can be found in a previous bulletin here.
