1. Latest events and forthcoming sessions

We are continuing our baiting round with a few lines left in L block and then we'll bait in the U and W blocks. As a reminder, the baiting calendar for this month is: B, L, U, W blocks and AWN0 to AWN6 lines. D block will be baited this coming weekend and the AWN lines from AWN25 to 19 were baited last week by a big team from Auckland Zoo, our thanks to them!

There will be 2 volunteer sessions this week, one on Thursday the 23rd and another one on Saturday the 25th of May. Both sessions will start at 8:30am at the ranger station. Please note that these sessions are not suitable for first time volunteers. I will run an induction session on Saturday the 8th of June for new comers.

Please let me know if you are coming to either of these sessions. Also please note that if you make a last minute decision (after 5pm) or have an unexpected change of plans it's best that you leave a message on our phone 09 810 7014 rather than email me.

2. New Anderson trap line

As advertised two weeks ago, there is a new trap line partially along Scenic Drive which needs trappers to check it.

The line runs between Pukematekeo access road and the two eastern sections of Anderson track. It has 9 DOC200s, 5 possum traps and a cat trap.

This line is looking for 4 people to fill its roster. Each person to check the traps once per month.

If you are interested or would like more information, please contact us.

3. Help with bagging!

This is our regular call for help with bagging. Thank you to those of you who have helped in the previous weeks.

Last week, we received some bait (and are waiting for more) and we would like to see you if you have some spare time to help!

4. Kauri Science Series: Dr Bruce Burns

Sunday 26th May, from 10am at the Arataki Visitor Centre. Talks starts at 10:30am with morning tea offered from 10am. The event is free, and there is no need to book.

Any questions please email kauri@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

Bruce is an Associate Professor in Plant Ecology at the University of Auckland. His research seeks to understand determinants and mechanisms of plant community assembly - what determines which plants occur together in natural ecosystems, and how do these communities change over time. Bruce is particularly interested in what determines plant species coexistence in native forest ecosystems, particularly in the forests dominated by kauri in Auckland. Some of his current research topics are the ecological responses of kauri and kauri forest to kauri dieback, and the identification and functional significance of kauri mycorrhizae.

5. Rockin’ the Rāhui event

Down the coast at Piha a concert is being held on Sunday the 2nd of June from 6pm.

This collective celebration will have information on Kauri dieback, the Rāhui in the Waitākere Ranges and is a positive celebration through music, art and education.
