1. Latest events and forthcoming sessions

We are getting very close to the end of the baiting round with only a few lines left in R, G and CGN block and then the N block which we have just started. Let's try to finish these lines as soon as possible, any help would be most appreciated!

There will be 2 volunteer sessions this week, on Thursday the 21st and Saturday the 23rd of November, starting 8:30am at the ranger station.

Please note that these sessions are not suitable for first time volunteers who have not attended an induction session. The next one will be held early next year.

Please let me know if you are coming to either of these sessions. Also please note that if you make a last minute decision (after 5pm) or have an unexpected change of plans it's best that you leave a message on our phone 09 810 7014 rather than email me.

Reminder: please RSVP by the end of the week (Sunday 24th) if you wish to attend our end of year gathering and trapping workshop, held at Matuku Link!

2. Trap catch data

Thank you to all the trappers for checking your lines regularly and for reporting your catches promptly in CatchIT.

For those of you who have recently joined the trapping team and don't feel confident yet with CatchIT, please do not hesitate to talk with your team buddies or to contact Gillian and I. We are here to help you!

Compared to September, the number of rat catches in October has increased by 50% with 89 rats caught!

Catches of other species have not shown the same dramatic increase, with only 2 stoats, no weasels and 2 possums caught.

Each month, Maurice Colgan sorts the traps into two categories: inside the Ark and around the periphery of the Ark (which is all the traps within a distance of 100m from the boundaries). The graphs for October are shown below:

Interestingly, the interior of the Ark is showing a rise in catches beyond levels of 2014 (our most recent heavy fruiting year before this one), whereas catches at the periphery are similar to 2014 levels. We wait to see if they reach the same peak in November.

3. Trap line vacancies

Rata/ Ridge Road/ Cutty Grass trap line has a vacancy (first weekend of the month). It is a beautiful triangle loop in the southern Ark, located between Cutty Grass, Ridge Road and Rata access line. It takes around 3.5 hours to check the line. It traverses kōkako and fernbird territories.

Pukematekeo trap line: the Puke team would like the help of a third person. The line is done fortnightly and each team member would come every 6 weeks. It is a nice walk between the ranger station and the top of Pukematekeo through puriri, nīkau and kauri forest. Trappers usually retrace their steps back. It takes between 1.5 to 2 hours to check the line.

AUTC trap line: we need 2 to 4 people to look after this line. The trap line follows some parts of Rosella access line, then follows its own way within the D block and emerges on Ridge Road track. Return is along Fenceline track. It takes an average of 3 hours to check the line. This line is north of Rata access line and also passes through fernbird and kōkako territories.

If you are interested in any of these lines or have any questions, please contact nature.project@forestandbird.org.nz
