Have you passed your Safe Kauri Certification quiz?

Remember – you are required to do so before doing fieldwork.

The training consists of:

1. Reading the SOP document: https://tinyurl.com/yapvqgof

2. Viewing a short video which illustrates points described in the SOP: https://youtu.be/-vRYxqs0x8Q

3. Answering an online quiz of 20 questions (you can re sit as many times as needed and all information is contained in the SOP): https://goo.gl/forms/EjNVx5V45n2aLgBG2

4. Upon correctly answering 18 out of 20 questions you will be sent a Safe Kauri Certificate

1. Latest events and forthcoming sessions

There will be a session on Thursday, the 15th of November and on Saturday the 17th. Both sessions will start at 8:30am at the ranger station. We will do baiting in the T block.

On Saturday, I will also run an induction session for new comers (same meeting place and time). There will be a sausage sizzle after the field work for everybody!

Let me know if you are coming to either of these sessions. Also please note that if you make a last minute decision (after 5pm) or have an unexpected change of plans it's best that you leave a message on our phone 09 810 7014 rather than email me.

Please note that first time volunteers don't need to take the certification quiz, however they are encouraged to read the SOP.

Welcome to Nikita Leighton and James Sinclair, Charlotte Jelleyman and Reuben McGregor who joined the Ark in October. Also a big thank you to our cooks: Helen and Patrick Doherty, Marilyn Burgess and Kay Wight!

2. Kōkako nesting begins!

The kōkako nesting season has begun with a bang, we have three nests with chicks already!

One chick has been banded and is ready to fledge any day now. The other two nests have a one week and one day old chick respectively.

Contractors Dave and Amanda are working with a group of Ark volunteers to find, monitor and protect nests with extra traps.

Ataahua and Kapua’s chick is shown below. It was banded last week with the combination GG-MG.

You may remember that last year Francis and Zelah produced a chick which was discovered as a fledgling by a resident on Scenic Drive. They have continued to visit residents throughout the year, moving round to follow the availability of food throughout the winter. Francis and Zelah currently have a one week old chick.

The other pair with a chick is Gordon and Kiwitea, down in the Kōkako block.

3. NZ Flower and garden show – volunteers needed

Some of you may have seen the advertising for the NZ Flower and Garden show that will be held over a week at the Trusts Stadium in Henderson. The Ark will have a stall and we need a few more people to help.

Organisers expect 25,000 to 35,000 people to attend over the course of the week so it’s a great opportunity to promote the Ark and conservation in general!

There will be enough people on the stall at all times to enable us to have breaks and some time to see the other exhibits.

Help needed for:

Thursday the 29th of November and Friday the 30th of November for the afternoon, 12-4pm.

and

Saturday the 1st of December and Sunday the 2nd of December either morning or afternoon slot (10am-2pm or 12pm - 4pm)

Please contact Annalily if you can help info@artants.co.nz
