1. Recent and forthcoming sessions

We made a very good start with our baiting round. B block is finished and P block is not far off completion. While we will carry on in AN block, we will also start Gleeson so that it is done before full wasp season.

We have not seen many wasps in the bush yet, however last Saturday one of the volunteers got stung and trappers have reported the first nest of the season. If you react to wasp stings, it is time to start being cautious!

There will be a session on Thursday, the 13th of February, starting at 8:30am at the ranger station, and there will be another session on Saturday, the 15th of February starting at 8:30am at the ranger station.

Due to popular demand, I'm running a second induction session this month for first time volunteers on Saturday (same meeting place and time as above).

There will be a sausage sizzle after the field work for everybody!

First time volunteers are encouraged to read the kauri dieback SOP and our Health & Safety plan.

Let me know if you are coming to either of these sessions. Also please note that if you make a last minute decision (after 5pm) or have an unexpected change of plans it's best that you leave a message on our phone 09 810 7014 rather than email me.

We have a replacement BBQ and we would like to assemble it on Thursday. We need a drill and an adjustable spanner, so if you plan to join the Thursday session and have these tools, please bring them with you!

Trapline vacancies

We have currently 2 trap line vacancies:

 ASC: 3 to 4 hours walk around a loop in the bush, in the south west corner of the Ark. Partly along Remus Roe stream, Ian Wells and Cutty Grass tracks. As a line near the periphery, you often get a chance to remove a pest from a trap. You will pass close to kōkako territories, so there is certainly a chance to hear—or even to see– some!

 Aio Wira: a very short line at the top north west of the Ark. The line is made up of 7 traps placed along the eponymous gravelled road. If you are in a hurry, you can even do it by car!

Rabbit chopper vacancy

We buy our rabbit meat for trapping in big pieces which are then chopped in the smaller pieces trappers use. We are looking for a small team of rabbit choppers to share the load. Rabbit bucket must be full before the weekend so that trappers can use it. Tools and training provided. Chopping a week’s supply takes around one hour, so you may be able to do this before or after another Ark activity.

Sausage cook vacancy

With the departure of Marilyn, one of our regular cooks, the team has been reshuffled and we are now short of one person to look after the Saturday volunteer sessions held on the 5th weekend of the month (does not occur every month).

Please contact us at nature.project@forestandbird.org.nz if you have any questions or are interested in one (or more) of the vacancies.
